Welcome to Pocket Doula

One thing I've learned after navigating five pregnancies of my own and spending more than 30 years attending other people's births is this:

Navigating pregnancy and birth can be overwhelming and confusing.

One website says one thing. A Facebook group says another. A friend had a completely different experience. Your provider makes a recommendation that sounds urgent, and suddenly you're expected to make a decision that could affect you and your baby for the rest of your lives.

You are smart and capable. You thought you knew what you wanted. You researched. You listened to podcasts. You read the books. But after your appointment, you somehow leave with more questions than answers, and it begins to feel like some of the biggest decisions aren't really yours anymore.

It's easy to feel like you're struggling to make sense of it all. At least that's how it was for me when I was going through it.

That's why I created Pocket Doula.

My hope is that Pocket Doula becomes the resource I wish every family had from the very beginning of pregnancy—a place where you can slow down, understand what's happening, ask better questions, and build confidence one lesson at a time.

One of the things that has always fascinated me about birth is that no two births are exactly alike. Every mother is different. Every baby is different. Every pregnancy brings its own unique circumstances, priorities, and challenges.

That's why I've never believed birth fits neatly into a one-size-fits-all approach.

The best recommendations are the ones that reflect the individual woman—not simply a routine, a protocol, or what's recommended for the average patient. Every decision should consider your unique circumstances, your baby's condition, your medical history, your values, your priorities, and the tradeoffs that come with every option.

My goal is simple. I want you to understand why you're being told what you're being told, what factors may be influencing those recommendations, and how to evaluate them in the context of your own pregnancy.

When you understand the context, the conversations become less intimidating. The recommendations begin to make more sense. Instead of feeling like decisions are happening to you, you'll be in a much better position to make decisions that are right for you, your baby, and your family.

That's what I hope you'll find inside Pocket Doula.

Pocket Doula is designed to grow with you throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond. As Pocket Doula continues to grow, you'll find courses covering everything from the physiology of birth to inductions, VBAC, breech birth, cesarean birth, newborn care, breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and many of the other topics parents ask about every day.

Start Here: Clear Thinking in Birth

Every journey needs a foundation.

That's why the first course inside Pocket Doula is Clear Thinking in Birth.

Before we dive into the many decisions you'll encounter during pregnancy and birth, I believe it's important to understand your role and learn a framework for thinking through those decisions.

Clear Thinking in Birth will help you understand how recommendations are formed, how risk is communicated, how to recognize the difference between evidence, policy, routine, and opinion, and how to advocate for yourself with confidence and respect.

Once you have that framework, everything else starts to make a lot more sense.  Questions?  Fill out our Get In Touch form for a free phone consultation or simply enroll in the mini-course below.

Community

Learn Together

Birth wasn't meant to be navigated alone.

That's why Pocket Doula also includes a Community where you can connect with other parents who are learning right alongside you. Ask questions, share experiences, celebrate milestones, encourage one another, and know you're part of a group of families who are committed to making informed, thoughtful decisions.

The courses provide the education. The community provides the conversation. Together, they create a place where you can continue learning long after you've finished a lesson.

Testimonials- if you can't have a doula in person...take Amy's knowledge with you by utilizing Pocket Doula.

Susan Sitkauskas:

I successfully had a VBA3C after having attempted it with my 2nd and 3rd child unsuccessfully. I couldn’t have done it without God orchestrating every aspect of the process including giving me the strength, a supportive husband, and the right doula! Although this wasn’t my first rodeo, it was the hardest yet most rewarding birth experience I’ve ever had.

Amy showed up with hands immediately on deck providing me with encouragement, assistance with pain management, and navigating position changes to help move things along. With all the voices saying “We don’t recommend it,” “Your body can’t do it,” “It’s too risky…” having her wealth of information and experience boosted my confidence. She never made decisions for me but she was up front and honest about risks versus benefits. And whenever she’d look me in the eyes and say “You can do this,” I could tell she meant it.

When you go for the birth you want you have to prepare both physically and spiritually and I think that’s what made the biggest difference this time around. I believed it was possible, I had a supportive team, and trusted God with the outcome.

I can’t say enough good things about working with a doula during my pregnancy and birth experience. Having that kind of support, someone knowledgeable, calm, and truly present, made such a difference in how I felt going into labor and throughout the entire process.

Amy, in particular, was incredible. She helped me advocate for myself and gave me the confidence to do so. Even after taking the birth and baby classes, which were very informative, having Amy there to help guide us through managing pregnancy and navigating birth was truly invaluable.

Her support for not only me but my partner as well made a huge difference. She helped him feel more confident and involved, which allowed us to go through the experience together as a team. Her presence brought a sense of calm and reassurance to both of us, especially during the more intense moments.

I had several conversations with Amy that really stuck with me, especially around wanting to deeper understand and make sense of medical recommendations from my doctor or midwife. I'm the type of person who will research everything, especially when it comes to health and our baby’s wellbeing, and Amy helped us sort through that information and feel confident in the questions we were asking. She never pushed, just supported and guided us in a way that helped us feel informed and empowered. With her experience attending hundreds of births, from hospital settings to home births, she brought a depth of knowledge that we truly leaned on.

Birth can be unpredictable and intense, but having her there made us feel less alone and more in control of our experience.

If you’re on the fence about hiring a doula, I would absolutely recommend it. It’s an investment in your experience, your comfort, and your peace of mind, and for us, it was one of the best decisions we made.
